What began as a joke, turned into a special night for CMSG.
First, Tom Carr (Senior Games cyclist) and Colleen Harrington (Senior Games rooter) conspired to get Fred Weber (Senior Games Ambassador) on the Zamboni during a Charlotte Checkers game at Bobcat Arena. Then, thanks to an all-out effort by Lindsay DeFaber, Checkers special events coordinator, the ride became just part of a Senior Games and SilverArts extravaganza.
On April 3, 2008 with the giant, overhead screen, displaying the activities, Chubby, the team mascot, slid around the ice on his four-wheeler, throwing CMSG tee shirts to a crowd of about 7000 hockey enthusiasts. Our games logo lit up the arena and information about upcoming events was broadcast between the first two periods. The shirts, specially designed and donated by Re vv ed Up Gifts, landed in the hands of twenty very excited fans, all of whom were encouraged to participate as competitors or spectators. And yes, Fred got to ride the Zamboni.
CMSG owes a great debt of appreciation to the Checkers Organization for their outstanding civic mindedness, and to Ron Deshaies, official photographer, for donating these photos for use by CMSG.
